Our Vision

Excellence, Every Child, Every Day

Whatever a child's background or starting point, the leadership team and staff at Mayflower are ambitious for all pupils and aim to ensure they finish Year 6 with the academic skills, social skills and knowledge in order to thrive. We recognise and value each child's individual personality and work to develop their self confidence and self esteem.

At Mayflower we strongly believe that once a child can read they can access the wider world around them. Each day begins with a high quality phonics lesson and by the start of Year 2 the vast majority of pupils move away from the phonics programme and develop their higher level comprehension skills through their daily 'Cracking Comprehension' session.

For the rest of the day pupils take part in a busy timetable of Mathematics, English and thematic work which aims to link all areas of the curriculum.  P.E., Djembe drumming, Mandarin and Art are all taught to a high level by subject specialists which pupils have access to from age 4. Thematic lessons are challenging and link British Values in a meaningful way, they all have the 'wow' factor at the heart to inspire and motivate pupils. The 'wow' factor is taught at Mayflower through ensuring that lessons have a real life outcome for pupils.

Each child will be taught in the way that suits them best and we will step in quickly if a change is needed.  All pupils who need further support receive 1:1 tuition from age 5 and free after school booster sessions to support them to make outstanding progress.

We expect all pupils in EYFS and KS1 who receive a universal free school meal to stay for a school lunch. We operate a 'Family Service' where lunch tables are set as they would be in a restaurant with table clothes, flowers and baskets of bread and crudités. Pupils are served at their table using china plates and eat with their teachers who encourage table manners and conversation. On Monday to Thursday pupils are offered fruit or yoghurt to finish their meal and on Friday are served a traditional desert of usually cake and custard. We have a chef who works with our parents and pupils to develop the menu.

At Mayflower we have an incredibly well qualified team including all fully qualified teachers with successful track records in teaching, an incredibly strong and experienced senior leadership team and all EYFS specialists working within our EYFS department. Together the staff live and breath the vision- Excellence, Every Child, Every Day.

We strongly encourage visits to our academy so that you can see our vision in action.
