The focus in Nursery for this half-term is All About Me. This week the children have been painting their self-portraits. The children take a selfie on the iPad, which they then use to help them with their painting. We conversed about their features and how we all look different. pic.twitter.com/0X3J5EkFXK

This year we have decided to take part in Operation Christmas Child again, supporting the charity Samaritan’s Purse. You need to decorate & fill a shoebox with items appropriate for a child. Last year we collected 286 shoeboxes! Let’s see if we can exceed that amount this year! pic.twitter.com/XpV7cn7DuV

Gifted and Talented

Here at Harris Primary Academy Mayflower, we strive to meet the needs of all our pupils including our Gifted and Talented students. We provide ample opportunities for thesepupils to reach their full learning potential in every area of the curriculum. This is often planned discreetly by the class teacher for each subject. We challenge our Gifted and Talented pupils through a range of deeper thinking questions, challenges, differentiated resources, dialogue and pace. This enables the pupils to make significant progress as they are being encouraged to develop a higher level of understanding.

For some subjects such as Read Write Inc our Gifted and Talented pupils are grouped by ability and will often work with older students. This allows the students to work atgreater depth and breadth and provide opportunities for independent thought. Working alongside older students can also give the pupils an intellectual challenge. For other parts of the curriculum such as a science experiment our gifted and talented children work in mixed ability groups. This enables them to contribute their ideas, creating positive debates and providing opportunities to learn that other students also have valuable contributions.

A child can show gifted and talented abilities in many areas including, reading, writing, mathematics, science, history, visual and performing arts, sports, leadership and creative thinking. Therefore here at Harris Primary Academy Mayflower we strive to celebrate all of our gifted and talented pupil’s achievements including our student’s extra-curricular talents.
